Pressure-temperature ratings: what pressure may the flange carry at temperature?

PN 16 means 16 bar – but only at room temperature. As the temperature rises, the strength of the material falls, and with it the allowable pressure PS. Choose material, pressure rating and temperature: the tool gives the value to EN 1092-1 Annex G, with its reference.

Determine the allowable pressure

Only for P250GH/P265GH: the standard grades the values by thickness. As a guide, a welding neck flange type 11 is thicker than 50 mm at PN 40 from DN 450 and at PN 25 from DN 800, otherwise up to 50 mm.

How to read the value

The pressure rating PN is the allowable pressure at room temperature – EN 1092-1 takes this as −10 to 50 °C. Above that, Annex G gives a separate value PS for each material group and temperature step. If your temperature lies between two steps, the tool interpolates linearly, as Annex F permits. PS is never higher than PN.

For P250GH and P265GH (material group 3E0) the standard also grades the values by the thickness of the product: flanges up to 50 mm thick have other values than thicker ones. For the austenitic steels each material number has its own series. Values in the upper temperature range are based on the creep rupture strength – the tool marks them.

The value applies to the flange in the chosen material. For the whole joint, bolts and gasket also count – their suitability for pressure and temperature must be verified separately. The dimensions of the flanges are on the pages of the individual types, for example Welding neck flange type 11.

Frequently asked questions

Why does a PN 16 flange not carry 16 bar at 200 °C?

PN states the allowable pressure at room temperature. As the temperature rises, yield strength and strength of the material fall; EN 1092-1 therefore gives a separate allowable pressure PS in Annex G for every material group and temperature step.

May I calculate between two temperature steps?

Yes. Annex F of the standard permits linear interpolation between the steps – this is exactly how the tool calculates.
