GF iFIT: operating limits

A system is as good as the honesty of its limits. For iFIT, GF names: drinking water, heating and cooling, 10 bar, 70 °C, 50 years of continuous operation – and just as clearly what does not work: compressed air, gas, steam, dimensions above d32. This page lists the limits as manufacturer information with reference – media, temperature and pressure, installation, bending radii, light and frost.

Which medium with which limits

Media with GF iFIT (brochure gfps-39052, 12/2023)
MediumiFIT (O-ring)
drinking watersuitable
70 °C / 10 bar
heating water (closed circuit)suitable
70 °C / 10 bar
cooling waterto be clarified
compressed air, oil-freenot suitable
natural gas (DVGW G 260)not suitable

Heating means a closed circuit – the composite pipe is oxygen-tight. iFIT is not intended for steam, open systems, compressed air and gas. Cooling water is a technical question to be clarified with GF before use.

Temperature, pressure, durability

GF states 10 bar at 70 °C and 50 years of continuous operation for iFIT (PN 10). The system is approved to DVGW W 534 / W 542 – always for pipe and module together; SVGW load values are available for the polybutylene pipe. Short-term fault temperatures are governed by the manufacturer’s documents; whoever runs permanently hotter than 70 °C needs another system – the route then leads to press and metal systems.

What the joint withstands: the burst test

In test videos GF shows what an iFIT joint withstands beyond its operating limits: in the burst test the pressure is raised until the pipe fails – not the push-fit joint; the pull test pulls on the joint until the pipe tears. Such tests are laboratory demonstrations by the manufacturer, not operating values: in service, 10 bar and 70 °C apply. The videos load only after a click; one of them is in Italian.

Installation: exposed, in plaster, in screed

iFIT is intended for floor-level installation: exposed, in plaster and in screed. Where it will later be inaccessible, the polybutylene pipe belongs in conduit; the composite pipe is dimensionally stable and is laid directly. Before wall or screed is closed there is always the leak test – after that the joint is as maintenance-free as the pipe itself.

Minimum bending radii

Both pipes can be bent by hand – within limits: polybutylene pipe laid exposed 5 × d (d16: 80 mm, d20: 100 mm, d25: 125 mm, d32: 160 mm), in conduit 8 × d; composite pipe by hand or with an external bending spring 5 × d, with a bending tool 3.5 × d. No internal bending spring, and a kinked pipe is replaced, not bent back.

Light, frost, fixing

Daylight: the composite pipe is not intended for permanent UV exposure – outdoors and at windows it must be covered or in conduit. Frost: like any water pipe, a filled iFIT pipe can be damaged by frost – drain garden lines or lay them frost-free (project garden water line). Fixing: we make no statements on fixing distances – here the GF documents are decisive.

Where iFIT ends

d16 to d32, 70 °C, 10 bar, the media of building installation – that is iFIT’s field. For risers of larger dimension, compressed air, gas and industrial applications the press systems are ready; the system finder names the suitable system for medium, pipe and dimension.
