How to use the dimensional drawing

Choose material and size – the result shows all dimensions, capacity, surface areas and weight, with the dimensional drawing and the 3D model. Greyed-out sizes are available to order – please ask us for their dimensions.

Capacity and surface areas follow the approximation equations of DIN 28011 for the dished part, plus the cylindrical straight flange. Weight for steel with 7.85 kg/dm³, for stainless steel with 8.0 kg/dm³ – theoretical values, the delivered part may differ.

Dimension table torispherical heads DIN 28011

Dimensions of the torispherical heads we carry

This overview shows the sizes for which we have our own in-house source – 11 sizes on 7 diameters. DIN 28011 lists further dimensions beyond these; tell us diameter and wall thickness, and we will tell you what we know about them.

The standard names dimensions. What is listed here, we carry – from stock or to order; how quickly a size is available we clarify on request.

Crown and knuckle follow from the outside diameter: R = Da and r = 0.1 × Da – which is why they are not separate columns in the table.

Order dimensions and values calculated by us; deliverable from stock or to order, availability on request. Limit deviations and figures from the standard: see the main table and the standard itself.

How this data is compiled. This page does not reproduce a standard. It shows the dimensions you need for an enquiry, an order and installation – for sizes we supply, checked against manufacturers’ and suppliers’ documentation and against our own product data. What you see here is what the market supplies, checked against the standard – or calculated by us. How we select our sources and keep them up to date: About this knowledge.

Origin of the figures: dimensions calculated with the equations of DIN 28011:2012-06 and checked against the printed dimension table of the standard, limit deviations to clause 4.4, capacity and surface areas from the approximation equations of the standard. Availability from our article data.

How to read the dimensions

  • h1 is the cylindrical straight flange – the straight part at which the head is welded on. The standard requires at least 3.5 times the wall thickness, with fixed minimum values for very thick walls.
  • h2 is the dish depth. The standard expressly calls it a calculated value.
  • h3 = h1 + h2 is the inside height. Outside, the wall thickness is added – which is why the result also gives the overall height outside, h3 + s.
  • Crown radius R1 = da and knuckle radius r2 = 0.1 × da apply on the inside. This makes the torispherical head shallower than the cap to EN 10253 and shallower than the semi-ellipsoidal head.
  • Capacity and surface areas are approximations from the equations of the standard, the weight is a theoretical value.

How to measure

  • The outside diameter is measured via the circumference at the edge of the straight flange, with a circumference tape: da = circumference ÷ π. The limit deviations of the standard apply to the circumference.
  • The out-of-roundness follows from the largest and smallest diameter measured at the same place.
  • The height h3 is measured inside, from the plane of the flange edge to the crown.
  • Unless the order says otherwise, the wall thickness may fall short by the lower deviation. If you need a minimum wall thickness, order it as “MIN”.

Torispherical head or cap?

For the pipe end there is also the cap to EN 10253 – at the same diameter it is considerably taller. The direct comparison at the same scale and all pipe end closures are on the page Dished ends and caps, the dimensions of the caps under Caps in steel.

Frequently asked questions

What is the capacity of a torispherical head to DIN 28011?

Choose material and size at the top – the result gives the capacity of the dished part and including the straight flange in litres, with surface areas and weight. It is calculated with the approximation equations of DIN 28011 – the dished part holds about 0.1 × (da − 2s)³.

About this dimension table

The torispherical head (Klöpper head) is the shallow dished head for vessels and pipe ends: crown radius equal to the outside diameter, knuckle radius one tenth of it. Choose material and size – the page shows all dimensions, the capacity, the surface areas, the weight and the limit deviations of the standard.

Materials: steel, e.g. P265GH, and stainless steel, e.g. 1.4571
