Frequently asked questions about push-fit fittings

Does it really hold? Can I undo the joint again? Does it work with my old copper tube? Here are the sixteen questions that reach us most often about push-fit fittings – each answered in three sentences, with a note on whether the information comes from the manufacturer, and with a link to the detailed page.

The questions in detail

Does a push-fit joint really hold permanently?

Yes – GF states 10 bar at 70 °C and 50 years of continuous operation for iFIT – pipe and module are approved together (DVGW, manufacturer information). The prerequisite is clean preparation of the pipe end: chamfer, calibrate, adapter up to the stop, module until it clicks. More on this

Can I undo the joint again?

Yes – with two water-pump pliers the adapter can be unscrewed – according to GF it is destroyed afterwards, the module can be reused, the pipe end is shortened by 6 mm and chamfered again. That is the difference to a press joint, which can only be cut out. More on this

Does it work with my old copper tube?

For 15 mm copper there is the iFIT press transition module 16/20 to 15 mm. For 18 or 22 mm the route is via thread: a transition with male thread on the copper side, the transition module with female thread on the iFIT side. Measure first, then order. More on this

Do I need tools?

Yes, but nothing electric: pipe shears or a pipe cutter and the chamfering/calibrating tool for the dimension. Both belong to every first order according to the manufacturer – we include them in the enquiry if you do not have them yet. More on this

What happens in frost?

As with any water pipe: if water stands in the pipe and freezes, it can damage pipe and module. Drain garden lines before winter or lay them frost-free – pipes inside the building are uncritical. More on this

May the joint be buried in plaster or screed?

GF intends iFIT for floor-level installation, pipes in conduit or pre-insulated – the joint is leak-tested before closing. Which points must remain accessible is stated in the GF instructions for use. More on this

Does it work for hot water and heating?

Yes: hot drinking water and heating water in a closed circuit up to 70 °C and 10 bar (manufacturer information). Steam, compressed air and gas are excluded. More on this

Which dimensions are available?

d16, d20, d25 and d32. With the adapter technique one module covers two dimensions (16/20 and 25/32) – the adapter selects the dimension. More on this

Which pipe goes with it?

Polybutylene pipe (in coils, also in conduit) and multilayer composite pipe PE-RT II/Al/PE-RT II in straight lengths and coils, also pre-insulated – always the system pipe, never a third-party pipe. More on this

Can I insert a different composite pipe?

No. Approval, grip ring and O-rings of the adapter apply to the system pipe – a third-party pipe is connected via thread – see the transitions page. More on this

How do I recognise a bad push-fit joint?

Inspection window of the adapter not completely filled by the pipe, no click when pushing on, joint slides more than 5 mm under pull-back, pipe end not chamfered or out of round, moisture after the pressure test. Each of these causes can be avoided with the system tool. More on this

Push-fit or press – which is better?

Push-fit needs no press tool, is detachable (according to GF) and ends at d32 and 70 °C – pressing reaches d75 and beyond, also for industrial media, but is not detachable. For floor-level work, series and refurbishment, push-fit is the short route. More on this

Can I get individual parts?

Yes – from stock, also individually packed, collection and dispatch. Put the parts list together with the tool and send an enquiry. More on this

Is the system approved?

GF holds the system approval for iFIT pipe and module together (DVGW, manufacturer information with reference in the brochure). More on this

How many parts do I need for my connection?

Rule of thumb: one elbow module per change of direction, one tee module per branch, one transition module per connection to the existing installation, pipe length plus ten per cent reserve, one tool set per dimension. The parts-list tool works it out for you. More on this

What is the conduit for?

The conduit lets the pipe move (thermal expansion), protects it in the screed and allows replacement without opening the floor. Polybutylene pipe is available directly in conduit. More on this
