Pipe and fitting standards worldwide

A pipe to EN is ordered with outside diameter and wall thickness in millimetres, one to ASME with NPS and schedule, one to JIS with A size and Sch. For each standards world this page shows which standard sets the dimensions, which the delivery conditions, how size and wall thickness are stated, whether it fits EN and where to continue with us. It is a signpost, not a dimension table.

A signpost, not a dimension table. The designations are checked against register extracts of the standards bodies. “Appears to fit” means: same outside diameter in millimetres, but wall-thickness series and tolerances may differ.

A schedule is not a wall thickness

A schedule is a series, not a number in millimetres: Sch 40 at NPS 2 is a different wall thickness from Sch 40 at NPS 8. Anyone ordering an ASME pipe to EN therefore needs the wall thickness in millimetres from the dimension table – the rule of thumb explains why.

Keep dimensions and delivery conditions apart

In every standards world two standards govern a pipe: one the dimensions (EN 10220, ASME B36.10M), the other material, testing and certification (EN 10216, ASTM A106). A pipe “to EN 10220” is therefore not yet orderable – nor is one “to B36.10M”. How the two worlds differ here is shown in EN and ASME compared.

Frequently asked questions

Which pipe and fitting standards apply worldwide and how is wall thickness stated?

Per standards world the dimension standard, delivery condition and fitting standard side by side - EN and ISO in millimetres, ASME and JIS with schedules, GOST and GB/T metric with their own series.

Is a pipe to ISO 4200 the same as one to EN 10220?

The outside diameters are largely the same – EN 10220 grew out of the same ISO series. Wall-thickness series and delivery conditions are in separate standards, though; for ordering, outside diameter, wall thickness and delivery conditions count.

Does a GOST pipe fit an EN pipe?

Often it appears to: many outside diameters are the same in millimetres. Wall-thickness series, tolerances and materials differ – hence “appears to fit”.

Do you stock fittings to JIS or GOST?

Not as stock items. The table shows what to ask for; whether an EN or ASME part fits or a counterpart has to be sourced, we clarify on enquiry.

A standard from another world?

Give us the standard, pressure rating and size exactly as your documents state them – we will tell you what fits from stock and what needs a counterpart.
